What does Housing Kitsap do for low-income housing in Washington?

Housing Kitsap is a Public Housing Authority and property manager for low-income communities across Kitsap County. Our Self-Help team works with home owners and buyers, while our Property Management team works with renters to achieve affordable housing in Kitsap.

 

What does Tax Credit mean?

A Tax Credit community is a property that participates in the federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) program. There is a significant lack of affordable housing, and the Tax Credit program helps make these communities more attainable.

 

How do you qualify for Tax Credit?

Both a single person and families with or without children can qualify. A household’s gross annual income is used to determine eligibility and generally applicants must earn less the 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI) at the time they move in.

 

What does USDA Rural Development mean?

The USDA Rural Development program helps provide financing to elderly, disabled, or low-income rural residents in multi-unit housing complexes to assist with rent.

 

How do you qualify for USDA Rural Development?

Both a single person and families with or without children can qualify. A household’s gross annual income is used to determine eligibility and generally applicants must be considered very-low-income, below 50% of area median income; low-income is 50-80% of area median income or under 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI) at the time of move in.


What is a Project Based Voucher?

A Project Based Voucher (PBV) is part of the Housing Choice Voucher program and is tied to a specific unit and is put in place to help low-income families with rental assistance. This voucher is unit based so if a resident moves out of a PBV unit, the voucher is now available for the next household in the unit.


How do I get a Project Based Voucher?

Project Based Vouchers are targeted to the families who need them most, this generally means a household’s gross annual income cannot exceed 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

 

Can I apply before I am of age for a senior property?

No, you must meet the minimum age requirement to be accepted on to the waitlist of a senior property.


How are bedroom sizes decided?

How many bedrooms you qualify for will depend on your household makeup. You can find more information about this in each communities Tenant Selection Plan.

Can I apply for a larger unit size then what I qualify for?

No, your application will only be applied to the unit size you qualify for according to the communities Tenant Selection Plan.

 

How long is the waitlist for each community?

We cannot predict how long it might take for an applicant to come to the top of the waitlists. It will depend on how quickly and how many other families leave the community. The wait is typically more than a year.


Do communities allow pets?

Yes! Our communities do allow a maximum of two pets per household. A pet deposit of $300 for your first pet and $50 for an additional pet. Maximum weight of 30lbs and maximum shoulder height of 21” per pet. You will also need to provide proof of spay/neuter, current licensing, and current vaccination records.


Is a deposit required to move in?

Yes, Housing Kitsap will offer a repayment agreement to any applicant for the payment of their security deposit.
