Self-Help Program Application

Housing Kitsap has been administering USDA's Mutual Self-Help Housing Program in Kitsap County and surrounding counties since 1973. As the industry develops, we are dedicated to continuously improving the Self-Help Homeownership Program we offer at Housing Kitsap. As we improve our program, we consider how to advance every part of our program: from the application process to securing cost-effective, sustainable building products and high-efficiency, energy-saving appliances down to safety measures, all the while building homes to homeowner satisfaction.

This unique and rewarding program allows income-eligible applicants the opportunity to own their own home by participating in groups of 8-12 families to build their homes together with lots of help and training from Housing Kitsap. Mortgage payments are subsidized - based on total household income - making it more affordable for hard-working families and individuals to own a home.

When we say we are looking at every aspect of improving the homes we offer, we mean it. Our floorplans, materials, techniques and appliances are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. All of our houses meet Northwest ENERGY STAR® requirements and exceed Washington State’s Evergreen Standard®.  We have reached this high level of efficiency by incorporating advanced framing techniques, high value insulation and high performance windows, combined with air leakage sealing and testing and other high value enhancements, such as energy efficient appliances and mini-splits.

Because Housing Kitsap looks to these standards to guide our improvements, our homeowners save money on the cost of their home – when they buy and long-term.
